The ample rainfall in the early months of 2025 have provided lots of water at the falls.
Fred Rogers, who often visited Buttermilk Falls as a young boy, was featured on a stamp issued by the U.S. Postal Service. Fred visited Buttermilk Falls to spend time with his grandfather, Mr. McFeely, who once owned the property that now comprises the natural area.

Accesible Path at Buttermilk Falls
Water levels at the falls can vary during the year. Early spring and fall are the seasons when the water level is typically the highest. A heavy summer shower can make a difference though.

Our path to the falls from the parking lot provides a slightly longer but easier way to navigate to the falls.
Buttermilk Falls is open year-round. Please note we do not maintain the steps and platforms during the winter so it is advised to exercise caution if venturing out during the winter.

For as long as water has flowed over Buttermilk Falls salamanders have lived here. Seal Salamanders, who have a preference for waterfalls, are one of the salamander species that live here.

The stream that feeds Buttermilk Falls is called Hires Run.
Winter Ice at Buttermilk Falls
Liverworts are a group of plants similar to mosses. They are far different than most plants because they do not produce seeds, flowers, fruit or wood. Instead of seeds, liverworts produce spores for reproduction.
Jacob Sweitzer was a local artist who painted many scenes in and around the Buttermilk Falls area. The panels highlight his interesting life and artwork. Sweitzer was a self-taught artist whose artworks have gained increasing interest from collectors over the years.
